Eligibility

UPDATED FOR 2024 COMPETITION

CHANGE ⇒ The Loeb Judges Value ⇒ The bullets have been updated to include references to fairness, impact, concise descriptions and respect for the intended audience for the journalism. The previous version of these bullets was titled Judging of Entries Is Based On.

ADDITION ⇒ Eligibility ⇒ Language has been added to clarify the eligibility of current or former Final Judges.

THE LOEB JUDGES VALUE

  • News Value: insight, informative qualities and durability.
  • Originality and/or Exclusivity: enterprise and discovery.
  • Reportorial Quality: thoroughness, fairness and impact.
  • Writing Quality: clarity in dealing with description, concepts, findings and complex issues.
  • Analytical Value: application of current economic thinking, breadth and depth of coverage, and contribution to helping readers/viewers see complex issues in a new light.
  • Impact: concise descriptions of the entry’s impact in the supporting statements and materials (submission questionnaire).
  • Audience: respect for the audiences for which the submitted elements were intended, including length, concise editing, production value, visual impact and inclusion of best-practice accessibility conventions like video captions, and similar as relevant to the category.

For Journalism Competition submissions:

  • Any journalist or media outlet (print, digital or broadcast) may enter submissions on a subject related to business, finance and economics.
  • Individual authors may submit a maximum of two (2) submissions.
  • Authors with joint bylines may submit a maximum of three (3) submissions.
  • Each outlet is limited to two (2) submissions per category.
  • The same submission may only be entered a maximum of two (2) times.
  • Consideration is limited to items/elements published or broadcast in the United States in the calendar year 2023.
  • URLs are required for all elements in a submission.
  • All entries must include a completed questionnaire. Any claims of significant impact or change resulting from the journalism contained in the submission must be accompanied by URLs supporting those claims.
  • Any significant challenge to the honesty, accuracy or fairness of an entry in any category, as well as responses to the challenge, should be included in the Questionnaire.
  • Published letters of complaint, corrections or retractions are examples of items relevant to the judging process.
  • Submissions for Competition Group categories are only accepted when the entry fee has been paid.

For Career Achievement nominations:

  • Organizations or individuals may submit more than one journalist or editor for Career Achievement Group categories.
  • There is no fee for Career Achievement Group submissions.
  • Nominees do not have to be retired.
  • Previous Final Judges can only be nominated after one (1) year of completing board service.

  • Current Final Judges cannot be nominated.

Journalism Competition Group - Category Submission Rules

The twelve (12) categories in this group are open for any journalist or media outlet (print, digital, broadcast/streaming, news apps and social) to enter submissions on a subject related to business, finance and economics.

Submissions must have been published or broadcast in the United States in the calendar year 2023.

The Loeb Awards welcomes and encourages journalism submissions with elements in all journalistic forms (print, digital, broadcast/streaming, blogs, news apps and social) and any combination of forms, including audio, video, graphics/interactives and those produced for mobile distribution on a subject related to business, finance and economics.

OUTLET/ORGANIZATION

The name of the outlet/organization must be provided on the submission form. All outlets/organizations should be listed on the form if the submission was a collaboration.

  • If the submission is selected as a finalist or winner, all outlets/organizations will be publicly announced and listed in the order provided on Loeb Awards documents, press releases, social media, public announcements, etc.

AUTHORS & CONTRIBUTORS

Names and email addresses of journalists/authors/creators for each element must be provided on the submission form.

  • If the submission is selected as a finalist or winner, all authors & contributors will be announced and listed in the order provided on Loeb Awards documents, press releases, social media, etc.

QUESTIONNAIRE

The questionnaire will provide background information on the submission for the preliminary and final judging panels. A separate cover letter is not required.

  • All entries must include a completed questionnaire.
  • If any of these questions do not apply to the submission, please write “N/A” in the answer field.
  • Please note that answers to all questions are limited to 150 words. Text in the answer fields can be formatted, including URLs as hyperlinked words or phrases.

The questions on the Questionnaire are as follows:

  1. Provide a summary of this submission.
  2. Describe how this submission relates to this category.
  3. How did this news team discover and report out this story/series?
  4. What partnerships, including across an individual newsroom, were involved in the reporting of this entry? How did those partnerships meaningfully contribute to the reporting?
  5. Is this entry part of a project that began before the current award year? If so, summarize the previous reporting (provide links where possible).
  6. If this entry is presented as service or solutions journalism, please describe how it helps the intended audience navigate a situation or solve the problem that is the focus of the reporting.
  7. Describe how the work in this submission is distinguished from competing reporting on the subject or how this submission broke key aspects of this coverage.
  8. What obstacles, if any, were overcome in the reporting for this submission?
  9. Describe any innovative techniques, platforms, technologies or data used in this reporting or storytelling.
  10. Describe any significant impact or change resulting from the journalism contained in this submission (provide links where possible).
  11. Please note any significant challenges to the honesty, accuracy or fairness of the work in this submission, and provide any responses to the challenge (provide links where possible). Elements can be of the same type or combine types of elements in a submission.

  • Examples of element types are as follows: Print, video (broadcast/cable/satellite/streaming/social), audio (broadcast/satellite/streaming/social), podcasts, digital/online, still photography, graphics, interactives, data visualization, blogs, news apps and social media.

ELEMENTS - URLs Required

In the submission form fields, working URL(s) must be provided for all elements in all categories.

  • If URL(s) are behind a paywall: Usernames/passwords must be provided and valid until October 2024.
  • For submissions in the Audio or Video categories: Please upload transcripts with the submission.

SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL - Unpublished

Unpublished supplemental material is NOT ACCEPTED.

Career Achievement Group - Category Submission Rules

The two (2) categories in this group are open for nominations of journalists or editors who have shown significant dedication and leadership in the industry. Please see the specific rules sections below for nominations in each category.

SPECIFIC RULES - LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The rules below apply to the nominations for the Lifetime Achievement Award.

QUESTIONNAIRE

Answers in the questionnaire should describe how the nominee's career has demonstrated exceptional contributions in specific areas. The judges are looking for a sense of the scale of the nominee's achievements and accomplishments over time. Please cite specific examples of the nominee's professional commitments to business, financial and economic journalism.

  • All nominations must include a completed questionnaire.
  • Text in the answer fields can be formatted, including URLs as hyperlinked words or phrases.

The specific areas on the Questionnaire for the Lifetime Achievement Award are as follows:

  1. PROFESSIONAL IMPACT
  2. LEADERSHIP STYLE
  3. TALENT DEVELOPMENT

LETTERS OF SUPPORT

Each letter of support should be compelling and justify the nomination by choosing one specific characteristic as the focus of support.

  • Minimum of three (3) letters. Maximum of five (5) letters

Submitters will need to supply the name and contact information of the writer (advocate) of each letter.

  • The advocate of each letter must be willing to provide additional information at the request of the Final Judges.
  • If additional information is requested, the advocate will be contacted and prompted to answer additional questions regarding the nominee via the Loeb Awards Entry & Judging platform.

The choices of specific characteristics for the Lifetime Achievement Award letters are as follows:

SPECIFIC RULES - MINARD EDITOR AWARD

The rules below apply to the nominations for the Minard Editor Award.

QUESTIONNAIRE

Answers in the specific areas of the questionnaire should describe how the nominee's career embodies the unsung spirit and behind-the-scenes impact deserving of the Minard Editor Award. Please cite specific examples of the nominee's dedication to their journalists and the craft of journalism.

  • All nominations must include a completed questionnaire.
  • Text in the answer fields can be formatted, including URLs as hyperlinked words or phrases.

The specific areas on the Questionnaire for the Minard Editor Award are as follows:

  1. EXPERIENCE
  2. COLLABORATION STYLE
  3. SUPPORT
  4. CHAMPIONSHIP
  5. INNOVATION

LETTERS OF SUPPORT

The letters of support should be from journalists whose work the nominee has edited or journalists whom the nominee's mentorship has impacted.

  • Minimum of three (3) letters. Maximum of five (5) letters
  • URLs must be included in letters referencing journalism edited by the nominee.

Submitters will need to supply the name and contact information of the writer (advocate) of each letter.

  • The advocate of each letter must be willing to provide additional information at the request of the Final Judges.
  • If additional information is requested, the advocate will be contacted and prompted to answer additional questions regarding the nominee via the Loeb Awards Entry & Judging platform.

LIST OF WORK

Provide a list with URLs of pieces/stories edited by the nominee.

  • The list should also include a few sentences regarding the impact the nominee's role as the editor had on the pieces/stories.
