Choice Architecture: How to Nudge Others to Make Better Decisions

Craig Fox
Harold Williams Chair and Professor of Management, Area Chair

Friday September 20, 2024 | 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. PST (Live Online)

Leaders succeed or fail not only on the decisions that they make, but also on their ability to positively influence the decisions of others. Ethical Leadership

Eugene Caruso
Professor of Management and Organizations and Behavioral Decision Making; Faculty Co-Director, Inclusive Ethics Initiative

Thursday, March 14, 2024 | 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. PST (Virtual)

People who work together often assume that others share their values and agree on what is important, fair, and ethical. However, we know from experience that two people looking at the same situation may come to vastly different conclusions about what is “right.” Failing to appreciate the perspective of others can lead people to be blindsided when what looks like an easy choice provokes unexpected and passionate opposition. This session will explore the ways that decisions can maximize value while also being respectful, honorable, and ethical.

Professor Dai will share research on how fresh starts—moments that lead people to feel psychologically separated from the past—affect our decisions, motivation, and job performance. This session will investigate how and why transition points in our lives both can inspire people to aggressively begin pursuing a new goal and give people reasons to slack off. The insights from this session will help you leverage the power of fresh starts while avoiding the pitfalls when you try to influence others and when you are motivating yourself.
