The UCLA Anderson Inclusive Ethics Initiative is proud to invite current Anderson students to participate in this year’s Ethics Summit! Recognizing that transformative leaders must effectively manage complex ethical issues when stakeholders have diverse perspectives and preferences, the annual Ethics Summit provides participants with an opportunity to rise to this challenge, honing skill in a community of peers and experts.

The 2024 Ethics Summit is structured as a two-part case competition. In the first part — a workshop — teams were given the opportunity to develop inclusive skill for addressing an ethical leadership challenge. In the second part — a full-day in-person program with two rounds of judging — teams will propose case solutions for an ethical leadership dilemma: Should some employees be allowed to work remotely even if other's can't?

Participants

This year, there are 14 competing teams, with four to five members each. They represent the Full-Time MBA, Fully Employed MBA, Executive MBA and Master of Science in Business Analytics programs.

Prize Money for Case Competition

Beyond the considerable value of the learning and competition experience itself, substantial prize money for the case competition will be offered:  

  • First prize: $10,000
  • Second prize: $5,000
  • Third prize: $2,500

For over seventeen years, Brian Farrell led THQ, Inc., a global digital entertainment company and developer, and publisher of interactive entertainment experiences, as its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
 
Under Farrell’s leadership, THQ grew its revenues from $19 million in 1994 to over $1 billion by 2008, and expanded its global footprint to sell and market its games in more than 75 countries. Farrell also drove the expansion of THQ’s internal product development capabilities to 16 studios.
 
In addition, Farrell served as chairman of the Entertainment Software Association, the industry’s trade association. He also served as co-chairman of the industry’s charitable foundation, which has raised over $10 million for children’s charities. 

He now serves as an Adjunct Professor at Anderson, teaching Managing Disruptive Technologies and Business Models, Ethics and Leadership, Gaming – the State of Play, and Toward an Entrepreneurial Mindset.  He also supervises teams  in the Applied Management Research and Business Creation Option programs.

Farrell has served as chairman of the Price Center for Entrepreneurial studies at the Anderson School of Management at UCLA, and is a member of the Board of Advisors for the school as well, and currently serves on the Executive Committee.
 
Farrell holds a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and an MBA from UCLA Anderson.

Jay has over 25 years of private equity experience. Prior to co‐founding Vicente Capital Partners, he was a Partner at Kline Hawkes & Company, a Los Angeles‐based growth equity firm, which he joined at the firm's inception in 1995. During his tenure at Kline Hawkes & Company, he was actively involved in substantially all of Kline Hawkes' investments and was a member of the investment committees for both Kline Hawkes California, L.P. and Kline Hawkes Pacific, L.P. Selected past board seats and board observer positions include: Advanced Products Corporation, CampusLink Communications, Evant, MicroNet Technologies, Overture Services (formerly GoTo.com), TranSoft Networks, UFO Communications (which was acquired by Cogent Communications), and VXi Corporation. Jay began his career in the investment banking industry, having worked for both Merrill Lynch & Co. and Smith Barney Inc. While at Merrill Lynch, he was a member of the Energy and Natural Resources Group and the General Corporate Finance Group. From 1989 to 1994, he worked on over 30 public and private transactions for numerous emerging growth and middle market companies.

Jay received a B.B.A. in Finance from Southern Methodist University and an M.B.A. from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. At the Anderson School, he was named a Toigo Fellow and a Venture Capital Fellow. Mr. Ferguson is a member of the Board of Trustees for The Wildwood School, the Toigo Board of Directors and a member of the Board of Advisors at UCLA Anderson. In June 2006, he was named to Black MBA Magazine's list of "Top 50 Under 50" Corporate Executives for 2006. In 2017, he received the Leading By Example Award from the Toigo Foundation. Jay is a past‐president of the UCLA Anderson School's Alumni Association, and was the recipient of the 2006 UCLA Anderson Outstanding Alumni Service Award. He is a former member of the Steering Committee for the Cedars‐Sinai Sports Spectacular, and served on the Board of Governors for NASBIC from 1999‐2001.

As the President of the West Region, Michele Havens leads the company’s wealth management business from Washington to Texas. She works with high-net-worth families and their related charitable entities, bringing Northern Trust’s 130 years of strength, stability and uncompromising focus on clients. As of the end of last year, Northern Trust had $13.6 trillion in assets under custody/administration and $1.3 trillion in assets under management.

Prior to her current role, Michele served as President of the Southern California Region, President of the Los Angeles Region (2012 – 2019) as well as President of the Pacific Northwest (2009-2010). Prior to her time in Seattle, she was a Portfolio Manager (2000-2006) in Los Angeles. She joined Northern Trust in 2000. Michele began her career in New York with JP Morgan.

Michele is the recent Past President of the Board of the Jonathan Club, and serves on the Board of Advisors for the UCLA Anderson School of Management and the St. Matthews Parish School Board of Trustees. Prior activities include the United Way of Greater Los Angeles Board of Directors, the LA Legends Club, Vistage International, Seattle Rotary, Woodland Park Zoo Board of Directors and Summer Search Seattle.

Michele holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in finance and marketing from Boston College and an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management, where she was recognized as the most valuable student by classmates. Michele attends the nine year Harvard Business School’s Post Graduate Executive Education Program for members of the Young Presidents Organization, 2018 to present.

Michele holds a Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) designation. She was awarded the Puget Sound Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 Award in 2010. In 2013, Michele received nominations by the Los Angeles Business Journal for the Women Making a Difference Awards and was honored by the Century City Chamber of Commerce for the Women of Achievement award. In 2019 and 2020, the Los Angeles Business Journal named Michele a Top Woman in Banking. In 2020, 2021, and 2022 Michele was recognized by the Los Angeles Business Journal as one of the 500 most influential people in Los Angeles. Recently, Michele was recognized as 2021 Los Angeles Business Journal Woman of Influence in Banking and by The Los Angeles Times ‘Banking & Finance Magazine’ as Banking and Finance Visionary.

Michele and her husband have two children. They live in Pacific Palisades and together they enjoy playing in the backyard, golfing, and skiing.
